Welcome to Broadview Co-operative Preschool
Broadview Co-op is a well established, community co-op preschool offering programs for Toddler, Pre-3, 3 to 5, and Pre-K families. Our Co-op has a strong history with many returning parents, children, and teachers. Our parents treasure the opportunity to spend time with their children in a preschool setting and be a valuable part of their education. Many long-lasting relationships between children and between parents have started at Broadview Co-op.
We are located at Grace Lutheran Church in Seattle's diverse Broadview Neighborhood. Our classroom space is large and bright, allowing for dramatic play, large motor skill development, circle time, sensory and art stations, and library time. We have a fantastic outdoor play area that includes a climbing structure and other outdoor toys, and a large, closed-off blacktop area where children can run, ride tricycles, draw, and learn.
Our teachers and parents work together to provide an interesting and meaningful learning experience for our preschoolers using the emergent curriculum model.
Emergent curriculum develops when preschoolers explore what is socially relevant, intellectually engaging, and meaningful to them as individuals. Emergent curriculum arises naturally from adult-child interactions and situations that allow for teachable moments. However, emergent curriculum is not built on children's interests alone; teachers and parents also bring interests that enrich the curriculum. The abilities of all the adults involved help the classroom culture evolve. Parent participation can have a huge impact on what our students learn!
What's special about Broadview?
A solid sense of camaraderie among parents is apparent upon entering our classroom. We are a strong, compassionate community that's committed to helping our children learn in a stimulating and socially secure environment. Equally evident are our engaged students who are learning essential skills in a rich educational environment. Our space is large and well organized, with plenty of room for children to explore and learn while developing friendships.
Field trips are an important part of Broadview's commitment to learning. These opportunities allow for children to learn outside of the classroom and experience “hands on” activities. Previous field trips included visits to a pumpkin farm, grocery store, fire station, Seattle Tilth, Woodland Park Zoo, and Carkeek Park.
Broadview's Pre-K program is available for children who will be at least four years of age by August 31st. It begins slightly later in the school year, allowing new students to adjust to the classroom routine, and runs through May. Our Pre-K program gives older children the opportunity to develop age-appropriate skills that help build kindergarten readiness such as early literacy, math, and science skills.
What's your involvement?
One of the most valuable parts of co-op preschool is the opportunity for parents to learn, too! Parents receive valuable parent education over the course of the year from an NSCC appointed Parent Education instructor. Many parents list this as their favorite part of co-op, and it is an important part of our preschool culture. Additionally, because the children see their parents learning, co-op teaches children to become lifelong learners. Each parent is required to work one day per week in the classroom, hold a position on the board or participate on a committee, fundraise, and attend monthly parent education meetings.
[02/07/17] Both our Pre-3s and Pre-k classes are cancelled today due to the delay start for Seattle Public Schools.
[02/06/17] As we follow the snow days of Seattle Public Schools, there will be no preschool today.
Our pre-k class made three ingredient cookies (bananas, oatmeal and raisins) in class this week. Not only did they get to enjoy a delicious and nutritious treat, but they also figured out how to divide the cookies between them equally!
This morning, our 3-5 class made an amazing self-directed dinosaur display! Nearby, people figurines were showing off their moves on the kid-built skateboard ramp. I love their imaginations!!
