Seattle Learning Center

Full-time and part-time preschool and childcare

Seattle Learning Center is a play based school that pursues quality early childhood education. Our teachers are passionate about inspiring a creative learning environment, developing children’s social/emotional, physical and cognitive skills, and promoting physical activity at an early age.

Both our Queen Anne/Montlake schools have passed the Washington State Early Achievers Standards and are registered Early Achievers Centers.

Currently, we offer the following full-day child care programs:

Queen Anne Location:
A full-day preschool and childcare program for children ages 12 months to 5 years old. Our school is open from 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Our program operates yearly and follows the school year calendar (September to August). The center is licensed for 37 children.

Montlake Location:
A full-day program for infants and toddlers ages 3 months to 35 months. Our school is open from 7:30am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Our program operates yearly and follows the school year calendar (September to August). The center is licensed for 21 children.

If your child struggles with anxiety, you know the challenge of finding the right things to say when he or she is worried. Rather than telling your child “You’ll be fine,” or “Don’t worry about it,” try one of these phrases.

Playing My Way

Dear Parents of young children,

Please stop getting pulled in by the greed-mongers attempting to get your business by instilling in you, the fear of your child being "left behind". They do not need worksheets, formal learning programs, structured teaching, "school readiness" programs. They do not need to know 8 colours, 10 shapes, read 50 sight words, or be able to sit for an hour unmoving.

What they DO need is a beautiful environment full of rich open resources, loads of opportunity for relationships, conversations and chances to engage in real literacy and explore the wonder and awe of the world around them. They need untethered access to the outdoors, and to the full gamut of what nature provides. They need streams of time for unstructured play, and they need warm caring adults around them who will listen to what THEY need and be there for them.

They WILL intrinsically move through to the steps of reading and writing when they are developmentally ready, and when their life is at a point these things start becoming relevant for them.

Allow them to flow through their childhood in the manner that their mind, body and soul is designed to do so. They will NOT be left behind - rather, they will flourish and develop a deep seeded desire to learn, without it being forced and imposed. And they will therefore develop a love for this learning. Give them back their little lives. Allow them to really understand the amazing world around them - in their own way, in their own time.

I promise you that they will not fail in life because they weren't engaged in a formal learning program in their early years. Give them time, give them space, give them love, give them play.

Signed on behalf of every early childhood professional who cares about your child, far above caring for your business.

How to Pick a Preschool in Less Than an Hour

Great article in NY times promoting preschools like SLC...play based, teaching social/emotional skills, using various centers, and being child directed rather than teacher led.

nytimes.com If anyone says “stay within the lines,” grab your kid and flee.
