Every Step of the Way
For parents of premature babies, one of the happiest moments is also one of the most frightening: the day their baby comes home from the hospital. In one moment, they lose a 24-hour medical support team and must shoulder all the responsibility for a still-fragile child. Because even after weeks or months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), babies well enough to go home may still face challenges coordinating their bodies or eating efficiently. This is the moment that Northwest Center arrives. Our Early Intervention team supports families in smooth transitions from the NICU to home. Care at this stage means much more than survival; it means giving babies the healthiest future possible. Eighty-five percent of brain development occurs by the time a child turns 3, and a full 92% is developed by age 5. When babies can master breathing, eating and developmental milestones appropriate to their age level, they can go on to realize their full potential later in life. We begin working in the family’s home within days of their baby’s release from the hospital. Our expertly trained Family Resources Coordinators, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Special Educators and Nutritionists develop meaningful goals with the family to support their baby’s feeding, growth, communication, and social-emotional development —while also providing consistent support time when parents face some of their greatest fears. Though 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely, there aren’t well established and consistent NICU transition programs in Washington State. In 2015, Northwest Center was a key member in the regional collaboration to develop the launch of the “Smooth Way Home” project. Since then, NWC has been a fierce advocate for the necessity of the program. It is so vital that Northwest Center provides this program even though it is sorely underfunded.
